Racing is set for Monday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, where the inaugural Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by MOPAR will conclude with eliminations in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.

Friday’s weather was nearly perfect, and an enthusiastic Michigan crowd packed the facility for a fast opening day of qualifying in Martin. The outlook appeared far more ominous Saturday, forcing officials to push back the start of on-track activity.

The Simpson NHRA Safety Safari, aided by its fleet of Ram 3500 trucks, did a spectacular job preparing the U.S. 131 racing surface for traction, speed and low elapsed times. Those efforts paid off with two full rounds of additional qualifying, highlighted by Lansing, Mich., native Austin Prock improving to the No. 1 position in Funny Car.

After NHRA and the U.S. 131 staff successfully outmaneuvered Mother Nature on Saturday, there was optimism they could do it again Sunday for the phenomenal Michigan fans.

They came remarkably close.

Persistent drizzle repeatedly interrupted track-drying efforts following a delayed gate opening. Despite a valiant fight by the Safety Safari and incredible spirit from racers and fans alike, continued moisture and falling temperatures ultimately forced officials to postpone eliminations until Monday.

Monday is a New Raceday

Today, the gates are open, the racing surface is being prepared and the nitro teams will be called to the lanes for an anticipated 11 a.m. start, weather permitting.

The plan is to run Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle to completion, crowning the first Michigan Wally winners in NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series competition in 66 years.

Watch eliminations at 3 p.m. ET on FS2 and a replay at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

The cool temperatures will create the potential for quick elapsed times and big speeds as championship contenders begin their march through eliminations at the opening race of the Countdown to the Championship.

Fans may use their Sunday tickets for admission Monday, and additional tickets will be available for purchase at the gate. NHRA.tv subscribers can watch all the racing action live.
